Technology
Building information modeling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) play a crucial role at Mascaro in new construction and renovation projects by allowing teams to quickly identify issues with coordination and constructability, communicate effectively between all parties, and deliver great experiences to our clients. Embracing the use of technology in construction early on, Mascaro has seen the results of improved project schedules, the ability to provide valuable information to subcontractors on fabrication and installation, reduced field conflicts, and less rework.
By implementing the use of programs such as Revit, Sketchup, Assemble, Bluebeam, and Navisworks, the BIM workflow incorporates the use of 3D modeling, scheduling (4D), estimating (5D), and clash detection services with an integral database to allow for the capture and sharing of rich information associated with a given project. Carlson Civil is utilized for civil design solutions for road and site designs and Topcon Machine Control is used for dirt work excavations and dozer piles. The use of 360° cameras, drones, and Robotic Total Stations has proven (RTS) to be immensely useful in maintaining quality on projects when implemented.
The BIM/VDC department at Mascaro provides technology services that span from the preconstruction and design phase through construction, and at times, into the operations and maintenance phase of a project. Their services can also be needed in advance of the award of a project by working with the marketing and operations department in the preparation of proposals and presentations to demonstrate Mascaro’s understanding of a project and address site logistics.
These are some of the projects that utilized BIM / 3D Modeling / Technology:

- North Catholic High School – 3D Coordination
- Harrisburg Federal Courthouse – 3D Site Logistics
- UPMC Shadyside Patient Unit Renovation West Wing - Clash Detection
- Penn State West Campus Steam Plant Conversion – 3D Model
- Clairton WWTP Phase 1 – 3D Modeling
